Two RSC flimsies

 When we came to the end of the RSC 2020 colours I had made a sizeable collection of Ship blocks which I was determined were not going to be put away and forgotten about.

I don’t make huge quilts: I’m not very tall and wrestling with large quilts is difficult for me. The basting is so hard to do as I use the floor in our bedroom where there is the largest space and scrabbling about on hands and knees really isn’t pleasant. I knew I had plenty of Ship blocks to make two of my preferred size of quilts.

I have made two flimsies. The larger one is 58” x 44” and the smaller is 47” x 42”.

Not very clear photos I’m afraid. It’s a horrid dark, wet November day and I had to put on the lights to get enough light for the photographs.

I pieced a backing for the larger quilt before I went out for my daily walk and this afternoon I intend to baste it.

RSC 2020 Yellow Round up

 Yesterday was the last day of October, so time for a Round up of the Yellow RSC blocks.

Not so many blocks this month as I have been busy with two baby quilts.

One 49 Patch block and 4 Roman Stripe blocks:

I hoped to put together all the Sailing boats I have made this year  and I have made a good start on that. I knew there would be far too many for one quilt so I am making two. The first flimsy is completed and I still have 20 blocks for another flimsy.    

 

When I’ve made both flimsiest I’ll show them in a new post.

Yellow sails this month

 I’ve done my six blocks for Yellow October RSC 2020.

I have finished making all the different coloured sails now so my next job is to lay them out and see what I can make with them. I don’t make huge quilts so I think I’ll probably get two quilts from these blocks. 

My ships will be sailing on a Voyage if Discovery!

Total Purple 2020RSC blocks

 Last Saturday in August - where has this month gone?

I never have many purple fabrics or scraps in my stash so I am surprised how many blocks I have been able to make.

From top to bottom: 1.5” 49 patch block with a Roman Stripe block either side,

More RSC Purple blocks and a new quilt begun

 First of all, a few more Purple blocks for RSC 2020.

A 49 Patch from 1.5” squares

And 10 Ticky Tacky Houses featuring purple somewhere! Sky, roof, door or garden.

And then I started a new quilt - for our niece’s baby girl expected in October.

Back in 2011 I made a baby quilt called “There’s nobody here but us chickens” using a variety of chicken-themed fabrics. I loved it and all the leftover fabrics went into a labelled plastic bag.

I looked at the photos I had on Flickr (koshka2 photostream) and tried to make the blocks. I knew the chicken centres were 2.5” but couldn’t remember what size I cut for the strips for the two borders which frame the chickens. I went with 1.75” and made up 9 blocks yesterday but wasn’t happy with them, the ratios looked all wrong so I tried using 1.5” Border strips. MUCH better. So this afternoon I took apart the 9 blocks, taking off the second border strips and trimming them to 1.5” and trimming around the first border, leaving a 1.25” frame. That all took a lot of time. I hate seam ripping! But I now have a few finished blocks, and a few partially sewn ones so hopefully I can continue the process tomorrow.

Three of the blocks happen to have purple in them so I’ve included those for a Sneak Peek!

RSC 2020 July Ticky Tacky Houses

This month’s colour is Dark Blue.

As I use a lot of blue and therefore create a lot of scraps I already have quite a lot of blue blocks made up in other RSC projects so this month I haven’t added to some of those.

However, I have made a few Ticky Tacky Houses with some blues in there. However I did have some other scraps cut in the required sizes so I used those too. These blocks are fun to make and once you have kitted up each they whizz along. Thanks to Cathy (Sane Crazy Crumby Quilting blog) For the idea.

All Pink Sailing

I have made the 6 RSC Pink Sailing Boat blocks for June, 2 of each of my 3 sizes.

I bought a few new fabrics for the sea and sky backgrounds earlier in the year but I definitely need a few more to throw into the mix. I don’t want the blocks to look too “samey” ( if that’s a word?)

A nice change from all the blues and greens of the previous months.

RSC 2020 May = Dark green

At the beginning of the year I listed ongoing RSC projects and UFOs I wanted to continue this year.
I had quite a bundle of  Twinkler blocks, not too many green ones, so today I added 4 more using Dark Green fabrics.

 
This is one of the blocks that inspired me on Cathy’s Sane, Crazy, Crumby quilt blog. I have already made one quilt from this design and am now busy making blocks for another quilt.

Another of Cathy’s blocks which tempted me was Ticky Tacky  houses and sometime last year (year before?) I made quite a few. Mine finished at 3.5” square, Cathy’s at 3” square. Fast forward to a few days ago and Cathy showed her finished quilt! Wow! I found my stash of little houses and couldn’t remember how I made them ( mainly the sizes of the pieces). With Cathy’s help and my measuring the parts of the completed houses I made a few more this afternoon. Firstly a few with green in them:

Teal Twinklers

I love making these Twinkler blocks - Cathy’s name for the blocks but I guess they are Friendship Stars. But I love the name Twinklers, because they do twinkle don’t they?
I was tidying up my 2.5” teal squares and thought I could manage to make two blocks, squeezing them in before the end of March.

Completed RSC blocks for March

I have finished the Teal/Aqua RSC March blocks which I had intended to make.
6 Ship blocks,  2 of each size.
1 x 49 patch block

When I decided to make Ship blocks for this year’s challenge I knew I had to buy fabric for the sea and sky parts of the blocks because I had very little in my stash that was suitable. So far I’ve used scraps for the boats and, of course, for the sails.

I also made a 49 patch block in last month’s colour Orange.

More Orange blocks for RSC 2020

Rain and cold winds still continuing so, as I had a completely free day yesterday I sewed and sewed.
I had made some orange Twinkler Blocks earlier in the week and yesterday made one 49 Patch block using already cut 1.5” orange squares from the stash I have in a tin. I sewed the small orange squares together Leader and Ender style in between working on some Red blocks for the Sunshine Guild. As both orange and red are always in short supply I have really turned over my stash thoroughly looking for scraps.

Here’s my orange total from yesterday:

I started making Twinkler Blocks last year and I now have 36 Twinkler Blocks, my 4 orange blocks bringing my orange total to 7.
The only orange scraps I have left are a few 1.5” strings, all fairly short length and a few 1.5” squares. I may make another orange 49 Patch block.

Making my RSC 2020 blocks

Orange is the colour for February, a colour I always struggle to find scraps for the blocks.
However, due to my recent gift from Wendy I did find a few orange squares so I made 6 Ship blocks, 2 in each size.

I don’t appear to have many suitable blue fabrics for sea and sky backgrounds so I think I’ll have to buy a few FQ’s so I can get more scrappy variety into the blocks.
