Moving along RSC Projects

I’m having a bit of a sort out in the house including quilts and projects.

I decided to gift one of my quilts to a very good friend’s 5year old daughter India and had initially picked out one quilt initially destined for Project Linus. I had even pencilled the label ready for embroidering using my usual floss back stitch. However I then came across another RSC Twinkler Star quilt, larger at 53” square which I thought was perhaps a better size. I knew I had made it a while ago but when I delved through my blogposts I discovered that it had been completed  in December 2017 and that I had written in the post that I loved it so much I had decided to keep it for myself! I made a new label calling it Twinkler Stars. When I came to sew it on I discovered that it already had a label entitled A Rainbow of Stars which actually I preferred but I decided not to make yet another label, ripped off the old label and sewed on the new one for India. Now finished and ready to mail to her along with a few other goodies for a  surprise parcel.

I had to take a new photo as I couldn’t find the original one!

And the pieced backing:

The green label is the original one which I discovered when I took this photo!

I did a little more to the Pink RSC leftover fabrics and blocks and this is how far I’ve got:

I had to make 8 extra Wonky Stars blocks and have now cut the next narrow border from spotted fabric. Two sides sewn on and the top and bottom ones pinned ready for sewing. Almost out of pink fabrics so perhaps it’s good that we’re near the end of February and ready for a new colour. Not sure what the next round will be. I have a few String blocks and some fabrics to make a few more and perhaps 6 or so pink Crumb blocks and a few strips of novelty fabrics to make extra borders. At the moment it measures 29” square and I would like to make it up to 40” square for a Project Linus Quilt so we will see what happens this week.

I had intended to sort out a few Project Linus quilts and arrange to take them to the new coordinator but health problems interfered with that plan as I ended up with an unexpected doctor’s surgery appointment and emergency visit to hospital for eye problems ( reactions to the steroids I’m now on). Fingers crossed I get a few more quilts out of my cupboard this week! And more sewing!

I haven’t done anymore to the Roman Stripe Coin style quilt because the machine I use for my walking foot is at the repairer’s. It’s completely jammed. Unfortunately he is snowed under with machine repairs so that is on hold too!

Finished RSC quilt, a flimsy and foraging for Pink blocks

I’ve been very conscious of lots of packets of RSC blocks stashed away and think it’s time to use some up. I started with the Twinkler blocks, deciding to use as many of them as I could which I managed with only a handful leftover. I’ve just finished the quilt and it’s ready to gift. Very pleased with it, lovely and bright and lots to look at. I’m calling it Twinkling Stars, a title which I think I’ve used before for these kind of quilts but it suits it! A mixture of machine quilting and echo hand quilting in cream Perle thread around the stars. It measures 48” wide by 55” long. And I’m giving it to an eight year old relative.

Some close ups of the blocks:

I pieced the backing using some of my favourite fabrics:

I have also tackled the pile of Roman Stripe blocks and found they were not very accurately sewn so I decided to trim them all down to the same size and sewed them into columns interspersed with a leftover piece of blue fabric for the sashing.

I used all the deeper blue fabric for the sashing so used a paler blue fabric for the borders to bring it up to a useful size for a Project Linus quilt which I finished this afternoon , now measures 41” long x 42” wide.

Much brighter than shown in the photo but it was early  evening by this time and I took the photo in electric light!

Just had time before dinner to pick out some pink blocks from various packets of  RSC block collections:

Still more packets to look through and any pink strips I can find to make some String blocks. What I am intending to do is to make a pink quilt from a variety of blocks. Having looked through Cathy’s quilts of this type (Crazy by Design) I’ve gleaned a few ideas of how to go about it.

A little finish from leftover blocks

I haven’t done much sewing this year due to health problems but I wanted to make another baby quilt for my local Maternity Unit. So I found some four patch blocks which have been a box for many years (leftover from some project) and three Sunbonnet Sue blocks. I had a new piece of a pretty apple green fabric with small white dots which I think complimented the colours in the blocks. I used it for making sashing, backing and bindings.

It looks pretty, machine quilted with Perle thread echo hand quilted around  the Sunbonnet Sues.
Measures 24” square, the size required by our hospital.

A close up of some of the blocks.

I also have four other quilts to donate which I hope to deliver when I go to the hospital on Monday for an appointment.

A happy finish for me, at long last.
